What's it about?
After weeks of concealing the fact she was pregnant and miscarried, Meredith at last tells Derek and is finally cleared to return to her surgical duties in the wake of the hospital shooting spree; Cristina experiences post-traumatic stress disorder in the midst of an operation; and Bailey refuses to let Alex operate until he agrees to have the bullet in his chest removed.
What we saw
The healing process continues post shooting, this week it's confession time as everybody hears or blurts out some home truths and will Meredith finally get signed off for surgery?
Review
Last week we took positive steps towards recovering from the season 6 ending shoot-out. This week we're having a relapse.
In the wake of recent events all the characters at Seattle Grace are bottling up their emotions or masking them with others and here we seem each character take another step towards becoming the grownups we're told they becoming.
There are a lot of emotions on show in this episode but the show is stolen, as always, by the Meredith and Cristina friendship which is only reaffirmed by their devotion to each other and their happiness. Mark and Lexie come in a close second, failing only because they didn't manage to get back together and instead provide us with some tragedy.
Story threads from last week such as Derek's speeding are dealt with in this episode as Meredith finally makes a confession to him which will fundamentally change their post-it marriage for the foreseeable future, as confession which also sees her finally signed off to return to surgery.
The stories in this episode, both personal and medical, perform their usual duel duty of educating the viewer on the moral of the story and this weeks moral... admit your feelings.
A lot of relief is provided in this episode through the admittance of feelings and it is clearly another step on the road to becoming fully grown adults, despite all being over the age of 25 in the first place. But there is also some despair in this episode further educating us that although airing our feelings is the best way, this doesn't guarantee a happy ending.
There's still comedy amongst the drama, this week provided by a very amorous touch-football team, which is what makes this show so great but I can't help feeling that we're going to under the cloud of Seattle Grace's PTSD for some time. This may become known as that season where everything gets really serious.
I for one hope we return to more light hearted matters sooner rather than later.
Next week...
When Derek receives an unexpected and unwelcome visit from his estranged sister, Amelia, issues between the siblings -- both past and present -- come to the surface; the Chief tries to help Alex when he notices that he's refusing to use the elevators after his near-fatal shooting; and Meredith and Derek continue their efforts to ease Cristina back into surgery after her post-traumatic stress.
