What's it about?
When President Martinez reveals a tough new strategy to force Sophia to reveal the detainees' plans, a new detainee, Maya, is thrown into the chaos. Meanwhile, Vicky and Carter are in possession of a very important hostage, and FBI Agent Collier's suspicions become more severe.
What we saw
The race is on for somebody, or in fact everybody to get their hands on Sean. Time is running out for Sophia to keep the secrets of her people and President Martinez may be a humanitarian but he's willing to go the distance to get the information he wants.
Review
I'm not going to lie: last week I was disappointed with this show. After a strong pilot I felt that last week the show let us down. In answering some of the questions posed by the pilot I felt that episode two gave away too much and took some of the excitement out of the concept... or so I thought.
After watching this weeks epic I feel that somehow I was duped in to thinking that I knew too much about the premise of the show and now post-episode three I feel like I don't know nearly enough. Congratulations Nick Wauters.
Waving my white flag in defeat I am now feeling the addiction, I have so many questions even after receiving so many answers but these are things to discuss when we know more. For now we need to discuss what is going on.
Lead man Jason Ritter is quickly earning himself that hero crown which I felt he was fighting for back in the pilot and the various different quests for information from the parties involved in the story is becoming ever more compelling as the weeks go on.
There are clearly several parties in play here but working out who is aligned with who is almost as difficult as working out which timeline fits where.
On that note: week three and now I barely even noticed the shifts in time and actually found myself knowing where each part of the puzzle fitted... or so I think for now.
Although this show is technically an ensemble there isn't a large amount of screen time given to mixing the characters, most are now paired off in their separate storylines preparing for some kind of eventual convergence somewhere in the future.
The idea that there is some kind of 'event' coming seems to be backing a back seat for the time being, I believe we are being lulled in to a false sense of security that the exploration of the 1994 survivors is the crux of this story which, given the title, it clearly is not.
I'm still not entirely comfortable with the notion of aliens (or 'non-humans' as they are referred to) but judging by the rumour that one of the big reveals we have so far had is a complete lie I don't know if I need to be bothered by this lack of comfort or whether I should just wait and see if it is actually true.
As promised this show is continuing to answer some of its own questions on a week by week basis whilst raising more and this is being accomplished with relative ease and does make me feel sad that I lost 'Lost' due to a lack of this kind of structure.
There is clearly still a great deal of thought behind how the information is being spoon fed to the audience and right now I recommend the writers continue along this path because it seems to be working - though rating are yet to be published for this week I hope we haven't seen another big downturn in the numbers.
This show feels like it is coming out of its shake down time at a faster pace than other recent shows and credit needs to be given to the creative team for having such a strong vision for how this show is to proceed. The usual stumbling points which most shows go through in their infancy are being avoided well and may this continue for the remainder of the season.
The cliffhanger is potentially even more 'what the f***?' inducing than that seen in the pilot so it's safe to say I'll be back next week and you should be too!
Next week...
As the White House tries to deal with a biological threat, they realize the only hope of resolving the issue is to crack Sophia during an interrogation. Meanwhile, FBI Agent Collier discovers Victor's secret life while searching for Leila, a businessman with undisclosed intelligence about the White House appears out of nowhere, and Vicky and Carter continue to hold their hostages.
