Bones 6x02 'The Couple In The Cave'

It's time for Brennan to face up to the fact that Booth isn't holding out for her to realise she loves him and there's nothing like a new girlfriend to give you a gentle shove in the right direction...

What's it about?
The team work on trying to discover the identities of a couple whose bodies were found in a cave. Booth's war correspondent, Hannah Burley, returns to Washington, D.C. and Brennan re-evaluates her relationship with Booth after realizing he's genuinely happy with Hannah.

What we saw
Brennan is acutely curious about the new lady in Booth's life and ends up right in the middle of their reunion providing both conflict and just a little hilarity. Meanwhile the bodies of a couple are found in a cave and provide a strong talking point on the topic of relationships and round out the metaphor of the episode.

Review
I'll have to take a step back on a statement I wrote last week: despite conveniently writing out all of the interns in last weeks episode and having Wendell appear in promotional photos the interns are back and apparently written back in a conveniently as they were written out. So scratch the potential decision on who to appoint at the new Zack. This week it's the turn of Clark Edison.

It's time to remove one literal mammoth from the room and bring in another, this episode is what I can only describe as the beginning of Brennan's true realisation that she has feeling for Booth, enter Hannah, the girlfriend whom Booth met in Afghanistan.
Those worried that this new girl is nearly a plot device to separate our two leads and eventually bring them back together fear not: she may in fact but nothing but that but she is a likeable characters and does provide both some good dialogue and some interesting conflict between other characters on the show. A particular favourite moment of mine is the confrontation between Brennan and Clark which is broken up by Cam as it provides a good insight into what is currently going on in our anthropologists mind.
At the moment she is only due to appear in a possible five episode arc and it is clear what the sticking point in their relationship is being setup as but for the time being it's worth enjoying this new obstacle in the Brennan-Booth relationship.

The crime-of-the-week here brings the usual procedural joys to the show and in the end I was pleasantly surprised by the culprit although if I hadn't been laying under my covers and not quite working on 100% brain power I may have been able to work it out sooner. But there is also an interesting parallel between the potential circumstances in which the victims died and the relationships which are playing out between the living characters. We're not breaking any ground on the crime front here but that's just not what 'Bones' is about right now.

There are a few sparse developments in some of the secondary stories in this season: Angela is starting to suffer from morning sickness and Sweets is on the relationship advice trail both for himself and for others but it is really the new Brennan-Booth-Hannah triangle which takes charge here.

Another thoroughly enjoyable episode which is setting up what will be a very interesting arc for at least the front half of this season. Keep watching!

Next week...
When Booth and Brennan are called to investigate decomposed remains found at the Jersey Shore, the team IDs the victim as Richie "The V" Genaro, a 23-year-old who partied the night before at a popular nightclub. Booth and Brennan question Genaro's peers and the club bouncer, and Brennan surprisingly proves her pop culture savvy and anthropological expertise after watching what she believes to be a documentary on the inhabitants of the Jersey Shore, but was in actuality a reality show set there. Meanwhile, at the lab, the team grows fond of Booth's girlfriend, Hannah and Angela tries to keep her pregnancy a secret.
